What is this atlas?

This interactive atlas organises and expands 458 mitigation and adaptation technology records using the taxonomy of the Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). The CTCN connects countries with climate technology solutions and, at the request of developing countries, advances their development and transfer through technical assistance, capacity building, specialised information and a worldwide network of companies and institutions. The atlas turns that taxonomy into a visual pathway and examines every technology as an integrated system of Hardware, Software and Orgware, together with its implementation, life-cycle and supply conditions. What can I use it for?

The atlas is a reference and early-stage decision-support tool. It organises information so that you can move from a climate need to a sector, a group and a specific technology. Each profile brings together technical function, applicability, nature, form, environmental function, infrastructure and energy requirements, inputs, Hardware, Software and Orgware, critical raw materials, countries relevant to extraction and processing, and supporting sources. This integrated view helps frame questions, identify capabilities and dependencies, recognise information gaps and prepare studies, road maps, terms of reference or technical discussions on a clearer basis.

How did it originate?

The atlas responds to the need to turn technology information produced through United Nations climate processes into a visual experience, as that information often remains scattered across lengthy and difficult documents. Its construction combines several analytical layers: the CTCN taxonomy provides the hierarchy of mitigation, adaptation, sectors, groups and technologies; the IIASA concept structures Hardware, Software and Orgware; sector-specific technical sources support descriptions and rationales; technology-type references inform characterisation; and USGS, IEA and World Bank sources guide the exploratory analysis of raw materials and production and processing geographies. These sources are harmonised across three language datasets and a shared structure for search, traceability and technology reading.
